The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) supports targeted sodium fluoride varnish programs because they are known to reduce dental decay (i.e., prevent new caries lesions and arrest non-cavitated caries lesions) in high-risk communities. The design, implementation and evaluation of such programs is based on careful consideration of the dental needs of specific communities and delivered by appropriately trained individuals. The frequency of fluoride applications should be tied to caries risk assessment and regular program evaluation.
CDA recommends that:
- Governments ensure professional oversight of fluoride varnish programs by appropriately trained dental and medical professionals and monitor outcomes of such programs.
