The Canadian Dental Association recognizes breastfeeding as an effective preventive health measure that promotes healthy dental development by protecting against infant infection and malocclusion. The Canadian Dental Association encourages dentists and other health care providers to consult the Canadian Paediatric Society Position Statement “The Baby-Friendly Initiative: Protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding”
The risk of caries (tooth decay), increases after 12 months of age. Wiping teeth with a cloth and tooth brushing is a vital part of a healthy daily routine for all infants irrespective of feeding method. The Canadian Dental Association recommends that all infants see a dentist within 6 months of their first tooth appearing in the mouth or no later than 12 months of age.
