October 31, 2025 - Ottawa, ON: There’s enough to be scared of on Halloween—like ghosts, goblins, and skeletons— sugary candy doesn’t have to be one of them. The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) wants you to enjoy the sweeter parts Halloween season while still keeping your mouth healthy. Here are some healthier Halloween tricks to go with your treats:

  • Chew sugar-free gum: Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which helps rinse sugar away. This can be especially effective after eating sugary candy.
  • Drink water after snacking: Sipping water can help wash away the leftover sugar clinging to your teeth.
  • Trade in candy for prizes: Offering new toys, a movie night, or other non-edible items for candy can be a fun and creative way to reduce sugar consumption.
  • Avoid sticky and chewy treats: Toffees and lollipops can get stuck and linger on teeth longer. Go for candy that dissolves quickly instead like chocolates or powdered candy.

“Kids can still enjoy munching on their Halloween hauls without damaging their teeth or gums,” says CDA President Dr. Bruce Ward. “Follow these mouth-healthy tricks, and you shouldn’t have too many problems with your treats. And don’t forget to brush, floss, and visit your dentist regularly.”

Your dentist is your health partner and will spot early signs of problems and provide professional cleanings to keep your mouth healthy for life.
