In September, the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA) held its Canadian 2012 Awards and Installation luncheon in conjunction with the CDA Conference in Saskatoon. The event recognized Canadians who have made outstanding contributions to dentistry.

Dr. Burton Conrod (l.) receiving the Elmer S. Best Memorial Award from Dr. Joe Harris, president of PFA.

Dr. Burton Conrod received the Elmer S. Best Memorial Award in recognition of his exceptional service to the profession internationally. Dr. Conrod is a CDA past-president (2000-01) and he also was the first Canadian to serve as president of the FDI World Dental Federation in 2007-09. Dr. Conrod became involved in organized dentistry early in his career, as “[he] soon realized that to effectively define and improve our profession, dentists must work through organizations. Our profession only exists because of a strong network of individuals eager to advance the ethics, science and practice of dentistry.”

Over the course of his career, Dr. Conrod has been granted several awards, including the Dalhousie University’s Outstanding Alumnus Award, Nova Scotia Dental Association’s Philip S. Christie Award for Distinguished Service, PFA’s Distinguished Service Award, American Dental Association’s Honorary Membership, and CDA’s Medal of Honour—which was created specifically to highlight Dr. Conrod’s lifetime of service.

Ms. Linda Teteruck, CDA director of corporate affairs, received a PFA Honorary Fellowship in recognition of her “valuable contribution to the advancement of the art and science of dentistry.”

Throughout her current 37-year tenure at CDA, Ms. Teteruck has successfully led communications and public relations campaigns, overseen social and award events, supported the Dentistry Canada Fund, supervised CDA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Research Program activities, and helped organize more than 30 national conventions and 2 international dental congresses.

Ms. Teteruck took the opportunity to warmly thank her colleagues: “I have had the chance to work with many wonderful dental leaders, board members and staff—at both CDA and the provincial level—who have mentored, taught, inspired and helped me throughout the years. I thank you for your friendship, fellowship, help and support, and hope that in some small way, I have been able to give back in return.”
