From Clinic to Kitchen Dr. Liz Worndl has always balanced dentistry with a passion for food. Her journey to the MasterChef Canada finale shows how creative outlets can strengthen professional life. Appearing on MasterChef Canada was not the result of a career pivot for Dr. Liz Worndl, but the culmination of a passion that had run alongside dentistry for years. “I’ve always loved cooking,” she says. “I was drawn to the show because it’s about home cooks. They all have different careers, pursuing cooking on the side.” When she saw that applications were open for season 8 of the show, she felt the timing was right. “I thought if I don’t do it now, I might never know if I can do it,” she says. As a teenager, Dr. Worndl wanted to become a chef and even completed a high school careers project about culinary school. Ultimately, she pursued dentistry, which she loves, but she continued finding ways to stay connected to food. During dental school at the University of Toronto (U of T), she started a culinary club, hosted shared dinners with classmates and contributed recipes to the school newspaper. Later she launched a food blog, with photography support from the man who would become her husband. “Food has always been such a creative outlet for me,” she says. “Dentistry can be extremely high Food has always been such a creative outlet for me.
