Remembering Dentistry Leaders Dr. Charles Daly Dr. Charles Patrick Daly of St. John’s, Newfoundland, passed away on July 25, 2024, at age 89. Dr. Daly studied at St. Bonaventure’s College before graduating from Dalhousie University’s School of Dentistry in 1962. Dr. Daly had an enthusiasm for dental medicine, and he pursued a successful career in dentistry for over 40 years. Not only did he have a passion for his profession, but he also greatly enjoyed the social connections and interactions that came along with it. Dr. Daly demonstrated his selflessness by providing pro bono care to his patients who needed it the most, allowing his giving nature to positively impact their lives. Over the course of his career, Dr. Daly held the titles and positions of Fellow of the American College of Dentists; Chairman of the Board (1984–88) and Registrar (1988–1998) for the Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Association (NLDA); the Distinguished Service Award and Lifetime Member of the NLDA; Outstanding Alumnus, Dalhousie University Faculty of Dentistry; and he was cited by the Pierre Fauchard Academy for contributions to the art of dentistry. CDA bestowed its Award of Merit to Dr. Daly in 1999–2000 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Canadian dentistry. “Dr. Daly, or Charlie as we called him, was tireless in supporting the dental profession at the local and national levels. He always strived to provide value and benefits to his colleagues,” remembers Dr. Robert Sexton, former member of the CDA Board of Directors who first met Dr. Daly at an NLDA meeting not long after he graduated in 1968. “The first thing that comes to mind when I’m asked about Charlie is that he was always such a gentleman, down to earth and a great family man,” says Dr. Sexton. “He was always steady, never ruffled and had an added sense of humour whenever needed.” Dr. Daly was described by those who knew him as caring, impassioned, light-hearted and having a genuine nature, he was a friend to all, never judgmental, thoroughly enjoyed gatherings of friends and family, a world traveller, news junkie, consummate host, sportsman and ultimate family man. He saw the good in everyone, celebrated life’s gifts and took setbacks in stride. Family was always Dr. Daly’s main priority. “Dr. Daly also had a great command of the elements needed to function very well in the operations of organized dentistry,” remembers Dr. Sexton. “He was a great friend, always with a smile and always offering to help in any way he could.” Dr. Daly is survived by his wife, Diane, his children Lisa (Craig Dobbin), Chris (Nancy), Heather and Sara; and his five grandsons. 46 | 2024 | Issue 5 Obituaries
