O n June 16, the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) published a costing note that looked at the 5-year costs for implementing a dental care plan for Canadians. The PBO note, called the Cost of a Dental Care Plan for Canadians , underscored the complexity of dental care programs and the challenges facing the federal government in its approach to this issue. In its note, the PBO estimates that such a program would cost about $9 billion over a 5 fiscal year period. The PBO looked at a plan that would cover the costs of routine care, fluoride treatments, radiographs, sealants and other combinations of caries treatments, dentures, and periodontics. A phase‑in period from 2022 to 2025 would gradually expand coverage to eligible households.
