She eventually became president of the society. “It was because of my involvement with the Toronto Central Dental Society and my work as a rep on the general council of ODA that I was invited to join the ODA board,” she says. By the late-1990s, Dr. Tomkins was deeply involved in organized dentistry. In 2010–11, she served as president of ODA. In 2015, she became the ODA representative on the CDA board of directors. On April 29, 2022, Dr. Tomkins was officially named president of CDA, the second woman to serve in the role in the association’s history. “Becoming president of the Canadian Dental Association is an enormous honour and a culmination of a long career in organized dentistry that began in 1977, when I called the ODA after learning I had been accepted to dental school to ask how I could get involved,” says Dr. Tomkins. “I’m delighted to be the second female president. I am extremely grateful to the many people who have helped me along the way.
