Dr. Robert Wood In 1980, Dr. Marina Sexton changed the landscape of dentistry in Newfoundland, when she became the first Newfoundland-born female dentist to practise in the province. As an advocate for access to care, Dr. Sexton chose to set up her practice in rural Newfoundland after meeting with citizens from Gros Morne who wanted to recruit a dentist for an area that was in great need of dental care. Throughout her career, Dr. Sexton has strongly advocated for dental care in rural Newfoundland and was successful in the creation of a rural bursary program to encourage dentists to practise in remote areas. She also played a significant role in the development of the children’s dental program in Newfoundland. Twice elected president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Association (NLDA), Dr. Sexton remains a solid fixture in organized dentistry in the province, serving on numerous NLDA committees and currently chairing the NLDA Annual General Meeting. Dr. Sexton has served in many roles over the years, reflecting her deep and passionate commitment to her province, community, profession and patients, all of which have strengthened with time and continue to this day. Intelligent, compassionate, hard-working and modest, Dr. Jim Shosenberg ’s passion for his profession is demonstrated by his unwavering commitment to access to care and the preservation of dental history and the written word.
