are looking at the site in Ontario, you’ll get links to resources at the Ontario Dental Association,” she says. During her work, Wong says she read the content of the site many times over. “I really like that it sounds like advice given from a real dentist,” she says. “The way the website is organized, you can explore different possibilities, go down different career paths,” says Shiff. “We thought a lot about ease of use, how people consume, digest, or interact with content. You can see something at a glance, or you can dig deeper.” The website also presents information in several different modalities so that it appeals to different kinds of learners. “We don’t want it to be a one-sided conversation; we want to interact with new dentists and have them tell us what they need and give us feedback. It’s a work in progress that we want to make better over time.” The website provides an opportunity to provide feedback or commentary directly to CDA at the bottom of every page. The website had a soft launch in September 2019 at Dalhousie University and was officially launched at the Canadian Dental Student Conference in Vancouver in January. At the soft launch, two students approached Dr. O’Keefe after he’d presented the website. “It was a wonderful moment,” he says. “They said that the website was exactly the resource they were looking for. And that its structured, logical approach was helpful.” “My favourite parts of the website are the audio testimonials from dentists with expertise in different fields,” says Dr. Lin, “because learning from their experience is invaluable. I would recommend it to all senior dental students, as they will definitely find useful information.” In his early years of dental school, Dr. Matthew Yeung, who earned in DMD from the University of British Columbia in 2019, wanted to be an oral surgery specialist. He spent a great deal of time researching prerequisite exams and residencies. The summer before his final year, Dr. Yeung did several externships in oral surgery and found that he didn’t enjoy the work. “I felt a bit defeated,” he says. “But then I had the privilege of being part of the core working group to provide feedback for the website, which was an opportunity for me to redefine my own career goals.” Dr. Yeung shadowed two endodontists, an oral surgeon, a periodontist, a prosthodontist, and a pediatric dentist. “Shadowing specialists allowed me to see what a typical day would look like, and also learn different tips and techniques each had to offer,” he says. Now in the first year of his career, Dr. Yeung works as a solo associate in the northern rural town of Chetwynd, BC, and continues to explore his options by enrolling in continuing education classes and pursuing accreditation in cosmetic dentistry. “I’m in a position where the website can still help me pursue my passions and enrich my career.” a 18 | 2020 | Issue 2 CDA at W ork The Future Is Here.
