Fire Prevention For Your Practice A fire poses the threat of personal injury as well as damage to your property and equipment. Take these precautions to minimize your risks.  Have at least one multi-purpose fire extinguisher—with an ABC rating—in each room, and make sure they are maintained according to the manufacturer’s specifications.  Hire a professional to maintain, inspect and test your fire alarms and sprinkler systems regularly.  Store flammable liquids safely in a designated area and in approved containers.  Replace electrical cords that are cracked or frayed.  Leave air circulation space around heaters and electronic equipment.  Ensure your tenants also follow these tips. Preventing Theft Your office presents an attractive target to thieves, since it contains equipment, medications and other valuables.  Keep a staff member at your front desk at all times. A fire, flood or other threat is time-consuming and costly, including loss of income if your practice must close temporarily. You have added responsibility if you own the building where you practise. Ensure you are adequately insured and take these steps to minimize losses or possibly avoid them altogether.
