His research centres on the politics and economics of dentistry, with a special focus on health and social equity. Through his work, Dr. Quiñonez has helped public health units, governments and researchers address issues like treatment for vulnerable populations and access to care. He is also a dedicated member of boards, committees and panels at both the national and provincial level including CDA’s Committee on Clinical and Scientific Affairs, the Canadian Dental Specialties Association, the Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry, and the Ontario Dental Association Thank you for this honour—it means the world tome. And finally tomy wife and children, Ruth, Emelia and Javier, thank you for givingme the most precious gift of all: time to toil so that I can be of service tomy profession.”  Special Friend of Canadian Dentistry Award The Special Friend of Canadian Dentistry Award is given to an individual or organization outside of the dental profession in appreciation for exemplary support or service to Canadian dentistry and/or to the profession as a whole. Dr. Mark Donaldson has practised as a clinical pharmacy specialist, clinical coordinator and director of pharmacy services at many health care organizations in both Canada and the United States. A gifted clinician and educator, his presentations on dental pharmacology to audiences around the world have helped dental practitioners improve their prescribing practices and keep their patients safe. As a faithful contributor to CDA Oasis for many years, he has shared his evidence-based presentations and extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences with Canadian dentists. I’ve spent a lot of time working not only in pharmacy, but also in dentistry, with the goal of building bridges between the professions. The dental profession continues to face the challenges that come with caring for an aging andmedically complex population, combined with new operative techniques, materials and drugs, andmy goal is to support our ability tomanage those patients safely. To be recognized for that work really means a lot tome. Thank you very much, this is just an incredible honor.”  Oral Health Promotion Award The Oral Health Promotion Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have improved the oral health of Canadians through oral health promotion. Dr. Tracy Doyle is committed to improving access to care for people with special needs. She is the director of the undergraduate pediatric dentistry curriculum and assistant professor of pediatric dentistry at Dalhousie University’s faculty of dentistry, staff pediatric dentist at the IWK Health Centre, and was clinical director for the Healthy Athletes–Special Smiles program of the 2018 National Special Olympics held in Nova Scotia. Under her leadership, a team of volunteers screened over 550 Special Olympics athletes and connected many of them with dentists in their local communities. As the faculty advisor for the annual Sharing Smiles Day, she also leads an initiative that promotes positive interactions between dental students and people with special needs. I’mhopeful that giving students opportunities to interactwith this vulnerable population early on in their careerswill foster very positive experiences going forward intopractice andhopefully eliminate some of the barriers to care.
