Not only was he a renowned prostho dontist and educator, Dr. Rosen was also an accomplished and inspiring artist in the medium of stone sculpture. Dr. Rosen grew up in Montreal and graduated from McGill University’s faculty of dentistry in 1953. When he was a dental student, he was inspired by many of his professors, which encouraged him to also pursue a teaching career. Dr. Rosen went on to become a mentor for countless dental students and teachers who now practise all over the world. Throughout his 55-year career, Dr. Rosen practised and taught prosthodontics and restorative dentistry at McGill University and at the McGill Health Centre’s multidisciplinary residency program at the Montreal General Hospital. In 1970, he created the first Canadian graduate program in prosthodontics and directed it for 20 years. Upon retirement, he remained an active professor emeritus at McGill. In 2006, the university established the Dr. Harry Rosen Endowed Clinical Teaching Fund, which provides funding to young clinical teachers for continuous education and attending conferences. Dr. Rosen received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. Among them, CDA’s Distinguished Service Award (1993), the Award of Excellence from the American Academy of Operative Dentistry (1996) and the William J. Gies Award from the American College of Dentists (2008) for his contributions to the profession and society. Dr. Rosen’s love of restorative dentistry inspired his passion outside of the profession; stone sculpting. Through his early mentors—their precision, technique and innovation— he realized the similarities between dentistry and art. The balance of esthetics and function in both fields shaped his career and legacy. Through his imposing sculptures of whimsical human figures, Dr. Rosen shared his optimism and positive outlook on life. Dr. Rosen donated many of his pieces to health institutions in Montreal, including the Jewish General Hospital, the Mount Sinai Hospital Centre, the Montreal Heart Institute and the Montreal Children’s Hospital. His final work, entitled Self Portrait, will be unveiled in March 2019 in Hampstead, Quebec. Dr. Rosen is survived by his wife of 62 years Dolores, three children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. a DR. HARRY ROSEN
