N ews and E vents 17 Issue 2 | 2018 | Dr. Gerrow recently retired as executive director and registrar of the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB), a position he held for 23 years. He is an experienced prosthodontist and professor emeritus of Dalhousie University’s faculty of dentistry. As executive director of CDRAF, Dr. Gerrow’s long-term plans include maintaining an effective national forum for discussing provincial and territorial dental regulatory matters. Dr. Gerrow is also a winner of the 2018 Gies Award for Innovation – Dental Educator, for “exemplifying the highest standards in oral health and dental education research and leadership.” According to a recent Dalhousie press release, Dr. Gerrow’s “vision of competency-based teaching, evaluation, and accreditation led to major changes in the way dentistry is taught and assessed in Canada and to the first nationally accepted dental competency statements within North America.” “It’s a very nice recognition and somewhat unusual in coming from an American association,” says Dr. Gerrow . “I feel very fortunate to have been at Dal during the time I was there and to have received the support of some wonderful mentors, such as Bill MacInnis, John Eisner, Dan Macintosh and Doug Chaytor.” The Gies Awards are presented by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) ADEAGies Foundation, whose mission is to “enhance the oral health of the public through programs that support dental education, research, leadership and recognition.” The 2018 Gies Awards will be presented on March 19 in Orlando, Florida. a Dr. Jack Gerrow NEW CDRAF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND GIES AWARD WINNER The Canadian Dental Regulatory Authorities Federation (CDRAF) named Dr. Jack Gerrow as its new executive director, effective January 15, 2018.
