15 Issue 1 | 2018 | N ews and E vents A champion of early childhood oral health promotion, particularly for low-income, new immigrant and Indigenous communities, Dr. Harrison was appointed to the Order of British Columbia, along with 15 other “outstanding British Columbians.” Throughout her career as a pediatric dentist, educator and researcher, Dr. Harrison worked to improve children’s oral health through the many initiatives she embraced with colleagues, including the development of the UBC specialty program in pediatric dentistry and the joint medical-dental curricu- lum based on problem-based learning. For her outstanding work in dental education, she has been recognized locally and nationally. Most notably, Dr. Harrison collaborated on community-based research at UBC that was instrumental in understanding the oral health challenges of pre- schoolers at high risk for dental disease, including those in Indo-Canadian, Vietnamese, and First Nations communities. Dr. Harrison inspired her students to be skilled, compassionate dentists and specialists who were guided by their responsibilities to society and to individual patients. “It is great that children’s oral health and my collaborations with so many dedicated individuals are being recognized by this appointment,” says Dr. Harrison. “The projects that I have been involved with have been partnerships with community members, fellow researchers, public health staff and practitioners. I have been very fortunate.” The Order of British Columbia recognizes individuals who have “served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavor benefiting the people of the Province or elsewhere.” The investiture ceremony was held in Victoria on December 14, 2017. a Dr. Rosamund Harrison Appointed to ORDER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Dr. Rosamund Harrison, pediatric dentist and professor emerita at the University of British Columbia (UBC) faculty of dentistry, has been awarded the province's highest honour bestowed to its citizens.
