17 Issue 6 | 2017 | N ews and E vents was inspired by the beautiful artwork that she saw displayed in the Heraldry office. Once she was back in Beaverlodge, she created a tartan design for the Heralds to show how much she appreciated their kindness, for giving her an office tour and for the time they spent showing her the coats of arms of past and present Governor Generals. The tartan that Dr. Martin produced was based on the colours and the lion found on the flag of the Governor General. She called it “Du Lion” and registered the design and name on the Scottish Register of Tartans, an online searchable database containing thousands of tartans from around the world. On the registry, her design was noticed by Dianne Quimby, a weaver living in Cape Breton, who got in touch with Dr. Martin to ask if she could weave her design. The unanticipated connection resulted in the production of two Du Lion scarves woven with merino wool. In 2015, Carol was back in the Canadian Heraldic Authority office, this time to present a scarf as a gift to the Heralds. “I was sure that was the end of it,” says Dr. Martin. “But then, I received a phone call in March 2017 from Steven Wallace, Secretary to the Governor General, who had seen the scarf and said they had been thinking about a tartan for the Office of Governor General and wondered if they could make mine the official design.” “I was absolutely honoured,” beams Dr. Martin. She has been told that the Du Lion design will be used to create items in silk and wool that can be used by Canadian officials and given to visiting dignitaries. The unveiling ceremony for the Du Lion tartan was held at Rideau Hall on June 13, 2017, where His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston formally adopted the design. a The unveiling ceremony for the Du Lion tartan was held at Rideau Hall on June 13, 2017, where His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston formally adopted the design.
