Cover Artist: Dr. Walter Vogl The cover art for this issue is an oil painting by Dr. Walter Vogl of Toronto. “The Jamaica scene has several elements of contrast and a certain mystery that appealed to me,” explained Dr. Vogl.Dr. Vogl first tried his hand at painting at the age of 14. He was attracted to his preferred medium of oils by his father. “My dad did several oil paintings, mostly landscapes in and around Sault Ste. Marie… I remember being drawn not only to the paintings themselves, but the vivid colours and texture as well as the smell of the linseed oil.” The 1978 graduate of the University of Toronto learned more about the craft of oils after completing his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Vogl was able to paint almost every week and enjoyed artistic inspiration each time he picked up a brush. However, he told JCDA about a creation of an entirely different ilk which may delay his future artistic output. “We have an 8-month-old son now, so my brushes will be dry for a while.”
