Remembering Dentistry Leaders Dr. William Sharun Dr. William “Bill” Sharun, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away on December 16, 2024, at age 76. For over 45 years, Dr. Sharun practised dentistry in Edmonton, earning the trust of patients and contributing to the profession through his leadership and mentorship. Dr. Sharun was known for his positive attitude, sense of humour and enthusiasm for life. He valued time spent with family, friends and colleagues, and was a strong believer in fostering connections and giving back. A graduate of the University of Alberta’s School of Dentistry, Dr. Sharun dedicated much of his career to advancing the profession. He held leadership positions as president of the Edmonton and District Dental Society, the Alberta Dental Association (ADA), and the University of Alberta (U of A) Dental Alumni Association. He also served as a CDA governor between 1996 and 2002. Dr. Sharun was a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. “Dr. Sharun’s contributions to organized dentistry go beyond the roles he held. He was an amazing man who had a positive influence on so many people,” says Dr. Hans Herchen, ADA president. “His legacy is powerful and deep. We will miss Bill as a colleague, mentor, leader, and friend within the dental community.” Dr. Sharun’s commitment to community service was as strong as his professional contributions. He participated in dental missions in Central and South America, Africa and the Philippines, providing essential care to underserved communities. Locally, he supported organizations such as Homeless Connect Edmonton and Kindness in Action. His work with Ronald McDonald House and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation reflected his dedication to children’s health and well-being. He was also involved in youth sports and community initiatives through the Downtown Edmonton Rotary Club. Dr. Sharun’s commitment to his profession and community was recognized with numerous awards, including the ADA Award of Excellence, an Alumni Honour Award Dental and Alumni of the Year Award from the U of A. “With his ever-present positive mental attitude, Bill was truly a force of nature—his larger-than-life personality and radiant smile left an indelible mark on everyone he met,” says Dr. Randall Croutze, CEO & registrar of the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta. “His generosity, encouragement, and boundless heart will be deeply missed by friends, colleagues, and the countless lives he touched.” Dr. Sharun is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Kate and Aubrey Zalaski, Jon and Priscilla Sharun and his beloved grandchildren. 38 | 2025 | Issue 2 Obituaries
