Remembering Dentistry Leaders Dr. TimothyGould Dr. Timothy Gould of Vancouver, British Columbia, passed away October 30, 2023, at age 75. Born in Bristol, UK, in 1948, Dr. Gould was inspired to pursue a dental career by his own childhood dentist. In 1973, he obtained his dentistry degree from the Guy’s Hospital program in London before emigrating to Canada and settling in Toronto. He started a dental practice and also continued his studies in periodontics at the University of Toronto where he earned a Diploma in Periodontics and a PhD in Oral Biology. Dr. Gould moved to Vancouver in 1979 where he joined the University of British Columbia (UBC) faculty of dentistry as an associate professor of periodontics and went on to serve as UBC’s director of the postgraduate program in periodontics. He was a respected periodontics educator and a prolific contributor to the scientific literature. During his career, he published more than 30 articles. Dr. Gould ran two successful practices for over 30 years, and after retiring from clinical practice in 2013, he joined the British Columbia Dental Association (BCDA) as co-director of member services, alongside Dr. Patti-Anne Jones. “At the onset of the pandemic, Timothy went above and beyond, working tirelessly to helpmembers determine how to navigate the turmoil of their new reality,” says Dr. Jones. “From dawn until dusk, he responded personally to hundreds of inquiries from confused and distraught dentists, unsure of how to care for patients, manage staff, and keep businesses afloat despite a mandatory closure and regulatory.” Dr. Gould managed the BCDA’s Return-to-Work Task Force and was essential in producing the “Clear on Codes” series for the association. He also had the critical foresight to arrange for BCDA’s voluntary Legal Expense Insurance coverage. Dr. Jones remembers Dr. Gould as humble and completely devoid of pretentiousness. “Timothy was the ultimate gentleman, respectful and kind. He treated everyone equally, as a peer, regardless of education or position,” she says. “He was a man of fewwords, yet they were always smart, engaging, or cleverly humorous.” In recognition of his contributions and dedication to the profession, Dr. Gould was granted BCDA’s Service Award in 2012 and shared the President’s Award with Dr. Jones in 2022. His wisdom and mentorship shaped the dental profession and the operations of BCDA’s member services team. Dr. Gould was a loving family man with numerous interests and hobbies outside of dentistry. He made the most of his time on the Pacific West Coast, enjoying boating, fishing and leisure time at his family cabin. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Ellen, his sons Henry (Cece), Christopher (Tatiana), and grandson Lars. Receiving the BCDAPresident’s Award in 2022.
