Remembering Dentistry Leaders Dr. John(Jack) McLister Dr. John (Jack) McLister of London, Ontario, passed away on October 10, 2020. He was 73 years old. D r. McLister graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and earned his DDS from Western University (UWO) in 1975. Shortly after graduation, r. McLister established a family practice in London, Ontario, where he practised for 32 years with his friend and partner Dr. Susan Ramble, until his retirement in 2011. Besides his dental practice, Dr. McLister was actively involved at UWO. For nearly 40 years, he was a part-time, adjunct clinical professor at the dental school. He also served on the Executive Committee of the UWO Dental Alumni Society for many years. In 2002, he received the Alumnus of Distinction Award from Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Dr. McLister’s exceptional commitment to UWO and dedication to organized dentistry was recognized with the creation of the John C. McLister Service Award, an award granted to a fourth-year dental student who demonstrates “outstanding leadership and service to the profession and peers through participation in organized dentistry.” Dr. McLister first became involved in organized dentistry when he joined the London & District Dental Society (LDDS) in 1975. He served twice as LDDS president and was an active member until his retirement, when he became an honorary member. He was presented with the LDDS Robert A. Brandon Service Award for his contribution to the profession. Dr. McLister also served on the Executive Board of the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) for several years and became ODA president in 2016–17, the same year the ODA celebrated its 150th anniversary. In 2019, Dr. McLister received the Barnabas W. Day Award for distinguished service, one of ODA's most prestigious honours. In addition to these roles, Dr. McLister was president and an international counsellor of the International College of Dentists (ICD) (Canadian section) and chair of the American College of Dentists (ACD) (Ontario section). He was an examiner for the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and a founding member of the Thames Valley Dental Study Club, where he served as president three times. Dr. McLister was a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, ACD and ICD. “Jack has touched the lives of so many nationally and internationally through his extensive involvement in the ODA and by extension the CDA, ICD and ACD to name a few,” says Dr. LouAnn Visconti, ODA past-president and a current member of CDA’s Board of Directors. “Jack has left his indelible mark on the dental profession, making it a better profession for it, and has set the bar high for the rest of us to attempt to follow. He was both a mentor and a friend to me and I count myself blessed to have had the opportunity to know him and to have served with him on the ODA Board.” Dr. McLister will be remembered for his incredible joie de vivre . He was a great bartender, storyteller and friend, and he would bring joy and laughter to any event. He is survived by his wife, Kathe; his children; John and Alison; his granddaughters, Claudia, Georgia and Juliet; his sister, Andrea; and many other family members. O bituaries 46 | 2020 | Issue 7
