REMEMBERING DENTISTRY LEADERS DR. ERICHATFIELD A true Cape Islander at heart, Dr. Hatfield started his working life as a lobster fisherman, but soon realized that he aspired to something more. Dr. Hatfield graduated from Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Dentistry in 1986 and practised dentistry in Yarmouth for 33 years. He was an important figure within the profession, as he was actively involved with many dental boards, associations and committees on both a provincial and national level. Dr. Hatfield served as president of the Nova Scotia Dental Association (NSDA) in 1999–2000 and was the chair of the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia for two consecutive terms. He was a Fellow of both the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Hatfield was also an examiner and invigilator with the National Dental Examining Board (NDEB). He received the NSDA Dr. Philip S. Christie Award in 2014, which recognizes outstanding service to the profession of dentistry. The Dalhousie Class of ’86 was a small and close- knit cohort; classmates forged strong bonds that remained through the years. In fact, they’ve had a class reunion on the last weekend of July every year since graduation. Dr. Richard Raftus, a Dal ’86 graduate, remembers Dr. Hatfield as a “kind, compassionate, fun-loving, practical [friend] with a load of common sense and an infectious smile.” Drs. Judy Flecknell and Jeff Williams, also Dal ’86 classmates and friends, remember Dr. Hatfield’s dedication to his patients, starting back in dental school. “With plans to practise at home in Yarmouth, Eric often reminded us: ‘I have to know how to do this stuff. I can’t be sending everyone on a four-hour drive to Halifax for treatment!’ We will miss his diplomacy, laughter and kindness.” “We worked together pretty much every day for 4 years,” adds Dr. Aaron Burry, CDA associate director of professional affairs, also part of the Dal ‘86 Class. “Eric’s sister, Jennifer, worked at the faculty as a dental assistant while we were students; and today, her son Chad is the NSDA president-elect. Like everything in the Maritimes, the connections are close. I used to see Eric from time to time, and especially at CDA meetings when he was in Ottawa.” Outside of dentistry, Dr. Hatfield enjoyed the outdoors. When camping, he loved to fish, hunt and spend time with friends and family. Dr. Hatfield is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joy; his children, Erica, Maggie and Andrew; and many other family members. Dr. Eric Hatfield of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away on January 20, 2020. He was 60 years old.
