21 Issue 7 | 2018 | N ews and E vents This new award recognizes U of T faculty members whose research has led to significant impact beyond academia. Dr. Santerre is internationally renowned for his research expertise in polymeric biomaterial design and biostability of implant materials. One of his most successful achievements is the development of Endexo TM , a surface-modifying material that can be applied to any blood-contacting medical device to enhance its biocompatibility. Endexo, as well as other novel technologies, are commercialized through Interface Biologics Inc. (IBI), a U of T company which Dr. Santerre co-founded in 2001 and where he serves as a chief scientific officer. Dr. Santerre is also the chief scientific advisor at Polumiros Inc., a recently founded platform technology company which has developed ReFilx TM , a regenerative tissue filler. Dr. Santerre is committed to translating his research findings into concrete health care ben- efits. With 60 awarded patents and 38 patents in progress, his inventions directly impact thousands of people around the world, in- cluding women who have undergone breast cancer surgery and people who depend on blood catheter technologies. Dr. Santerre’s groundbreaking work has been recognized throughout the research community. He has been honoured with the Governor General’s Award for Innovation (2017), the Connaught Innovation Award (2016-17), the Ernest C. Manning Principal Award for Entrepreneurship (2014), and a fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He was recently named the Baxter Chair of Health Technology Commercialization by the University Health Network, which will enable Dr. Santerre to advance his research in tissue engineering, implants, and medical devices at the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research. All PIA recipients become members of the Impact Academy for 5 years. During this period, they each receive an award of $10,000 per year to be used towards their research. a Dr. Paul Santerre of the University of Toronto RECEIVES MORE ACCOLADES Dr. Paul Santerre, professor of biomaterials at the University of Toronto (U of T) faculty of dentistry and the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME), was one of seven recipients of the university’s inaugural President’s Impact Award (PIA).
